Biography

Gary Newman was born and raised in Rochester, NY.  Throughout high school Gary recognized his ability and interest in math, physics, Auto-CAD, and residential construction.  Gary is currently a fifth year architectural engineering student at The Pennsylvania State University.  He is pursuing his Bachelor of Architectural Engineering specializing in the structural option.  Gary is planning to graduate in May 2008.

Outside of school work Gary has pursued several different activities over the years that have helped him grow as a person and determine in what direction he wants to take his life.  To pursue his interest in math education, Gary worked as a math tutor during his junior year of college.  Gary tutored college students in algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and differential equations.  Although he found this work to be rewarding and interesting it did not inspire him to change his focus toward a career in math education.

Gary worked with a general contractor during his summers back in Rochester.  His work involved interior and exterior renovations of residential projects.  This work has made Gary interested in the engineering side of residential structures and wood construction.  Working on houses with his hands is something Gary wants to continue to do as a hobby.

Last summer Gary worked as an intern with Desman Associates, an engineering firm out of the Washington, DC area that specializes in parking structures and restoration of building envelopes.  During this experience he learned about designing concrete structural members in post-tension, conducting field surveys, and creating cost estimates.  Gary liked working in a small office environment and found working with concrete structures to be interesting.

Breakdancing is something Gary has been doing for the past 3 years and it has become more of a way of life than a hobby.  His crew at Penn State performs at Thon, other school events, and goes to competitions around the east coast area.
